May 8 - 11

Happy Mother's Day to all you ladies!  This might be a day early, but celebrate two days.  You deserve it!!

We left Baton Rouge and decided to stop at the plant where they create Tabasco Sauce.  What a fabulous tour! You open the doors and your eyes water. :-) They also have a beautiful gardens that were created by Ned, the son of the original McIlhenny.  A few pictures from that day.

Can you see John at the base of that tree?  Mammoth!

This a statue of Buddha that is over 10 feet tall, a present to Ned in 1936, and he built a display temple overlooking a quiet pond with water lilies, frogs and lots of bamboo.  Very powerful.  There were several school trips going on while we were there, and some kids left change as an offering and a perfect orange was left at the door.

He also created a rookery for the American Egret that was becoming endangered.  They take the roosting racks apart each year and rebuild with the bamboo that is on the property.

Walking into the Tabasco plant was quite a rush - literally!  Tears to the eyes!

We finally got to Texas to stay a couple of days with my brother, Ron.  We to the Ladybird Wildflower Gardens intending to go hiking but a tremendous thunderstorm rolled in (which they desperately need the rain in Texas) so our trip was cut short.  At least I got a couple of shots before we ran for the car.

This is my brother Ron.  Such a goofball but as you can tell, we always have a good time.
And here's a picture of he and his wonderful dog, Lucas, as he's getting ready to take off for graduation ceremonies at Texas University San Marcos where he is a voice professor after singing opera for years in Europe.  He can actually be serious if it's really necessary!

From Ron's house in Kyle, Texas, we were going to our first night of camping  But along the way we got to see my aunt Noreen, her husband Orman and their daughter Melanie.  It's a very large family (37 first cousins offers lots of visiting opportunities!) Such fun!

What an awesome family.  Life is very good!

Well ..... this was the "campsite" we had reserved for our first night.  Not exactly what we had envisioned and needless to say ... we did not stay.  We're at a Best Western with a very slow internet (almost dial up speed.  Yuck!!) so I'll send more pictures later.  Well maybe one more picture.  They advertised cold showers at the campsite.

So???? What do you think?  Isn't the bright yellow shower head just the finishing touch???

  2. Whoa, that tree is HUGE! I would have passed on the camping, too. Much better to get a good night's sleep and wake up to hot breakfast. Happy Mother's Day, all your kids miss you!

  3. I need to plan a trip to Avery Island....It looks great.
What a scream....both the campsite and the shower!!!
Better luck next time. It reminds me of a place we booked for a
youth-group retreat in Arkansas. It did have walls and a floor....all wood, but the beds
were just four posts and a plank. No mattresses, no bedding, no
running water and very scary owners. We found a motel too!
    Happy Mother's Day, Marilyn!
